This was my first time shooting at Coon Bluff by the Salt River in Arizona. I went to Red Mountain High School and can’t believe I never ventured a little North to see the beautiful Salt River before! I have been trying for months to convince my cousins to wake up at sunrise so I could photograph them with wild horses there. Guess nobody else in my family is a morning person either. It must run in our blood…it just so happens my husband is the epitome of a morning person! I am only bright and bushy tailed in the morning if it involves photography, travel, animals, or the ocean!
I thought sunrise would be the only time we could see the horses, but I am so glad I was wrong! I got there before Alyssa and Brandon’s sunset session time to check out the best spots for photos and snuck up on some horses by not-so-quietly tip-toeing across the river (note to self-invest in waterproof boots). I was not able to get very close before they ran away. I was so sad! I thought I just ruined our chance at getting horses in the photos…but alas, there is a happy ending I promise! As you can tell from the header image-we did get photos with the horses in the background!!! Such a dream!
I am so lucky Alyssa found me! I absolutely loved Alyssa and Brandon because they are so funny! I know I shouldn’t judge but we walked by this other photographer taking photos of a couple in all black– the photographer was barely talking. He just moved around to shoot from different angles and it all seemed so serious. I truly believe there is a photographer to match any kind of style or personality a client has. I am glad he takes those clients so I can have clients like Alyssa and Brandon that are fashionable but will also make jokes about not stepping in horse poo haha (which I probably did several times because I have a tendency to shoot while stepping backwards without looking where I am going…it is a poor life choice).
These two have been together over 7 years! Lucky 7 right?! Wrong, that takes effort! That is as long as I have known my husband! I’m sure they are better at relationshipping than we are even (yes we are making that a verb, can we make that a hashtag too like #relationshipping and #relationshipgoals). They met working at Applebee’s , how cute is that! Romance in the restaurant <3 I’m sure there’s a novel about it somewhere! Well, all you need to know is that you can tell they are in love by the look in their eyes when they see each other and how they laugh together.
I want her hair! I kept making her do these hair flips because she is the Next Miss America I swear! Woosh
We started in the trees because I didn’t realize there was a giant mountain that would cause us to light so fast so I wanted to get the shade photos done first. This doesn’t look much like the Arizona I am used to!
As we were moving to the next spot I had in mind, a wildlife photographer yelled at us “There are horses that way! (pointing) What a magical backdrop!”. We took off trying to follow the sounds of distance neighs! They were still pretty far away…but how awesome is that?! That moody sky and muddy water isn’t usually my jam, but keep reading on…there are MORE horses later 🙂
Next we moved to a few spots on rocks on the edge of the river. The first rock I wanted was taken, so Brandon had a brilliant idea to tell that photographer there are horses down the river so they should run to go get pictures with them haha! Don’t worry – we played nice and found a different rock that still made them look angelic!
You guys, I know it can be awkward looking sometimes but I live for the crinkled nose, the wide open mouth laugh, the occasionally snort…I fell in love with my husband from the way he makes me laugh! Capturing moments like this warms my heart!
Living on the edge!
Why are men afraid of horses? Alyssa had to beg him to walk out there, ha. I felt like it was the quote from Arthur, to paraphrase “I don’t trust horses, I mean who can pick a shoe for their entire lifetime? Tricky animals!”
To be fair, these are wild horses that weigh a ton and there were several of them. Who knows what they were plotting against us…
He wanted to twirl too XD but backed out at the last second
Thank you Alyssa and Brandon for letting me photograph you! Such gorgeous people! I can’t wait for your wedding in December!!!
